Cryotherapy – What You Need To Know

Even if you’re familiar with cryotherapy, you likely have a lot of questions about it. Learn more by reading below, check out our articles and research on cryotherapy, and contact us any time with questions.

WHOLE-BODY CRYOTHERAPY

Whole-body Cryotherapy is one of the fastest-growing, holistic treatments in the US. A single two to three minute session promotes natural healing for your body and can leave you feeling refreshed and invigorated. During your session, you will step into a cryosauna that fills with a nitrogen vapor and dry chill that exposes your whole body, except for the neck up, to temperatures between -130F and -184F. During the two to three minute treatment, the surface of your skin is cooled. The cooling of your skin, tricks your body into protecting itself from the cold, causing your body to draw all the blood from your extremities into the core.

From there, your body’s natural filtration system removes toxins and inflammatory properties from the blood. The blood re-oxygenates and fills with vital nutrients, enzymes and enriched oxygen before recirculating back into your outer extremities. The process promotes a positive effect for your body. After exiting the cryosauna, you can experience a multitude of benefits from the treatment. Benefits can include relief from pain and inflammation, heightened natural energy and mood, improved clarity and focus, a spike in your metabolism, collagen production and cellular turnover.

LOCALIZED CRYOTHERAPY

Localized Cryotherapy is a similar process to whole-body Cryotherapy, however it targets certain areas of concern for your body. During a four-to-six minute localized cryotherapy treatment, a licensed technician uses a wand that pumps out a liquid nitrogen vapor to the target area of concern on your body. Localized Cryotherapy is a holistic healing treatment that uses cryogenic temperatures in order to induce your body to a similar reaction it has during whole-body cryotherapy. This reaction supports treatment of diseases and mobility dysfunctions.

You can use localized cryotherapy for several reasons. Do you have an injury or surgery that you are recovering from? Use localized cryotherapy treatments in conjunction with physical therapy to promote faster healing. Suffering from arthritis in your joints? Use localized cryotherapy treatments to specifically target the inflamed areas to ease the pain and inflammation. Does your lower back or shoulder hurt from sitting at a desk all day long? Use localized cryotherapy to target the areas that are causing you pain and discomfort. These are just a few of the many reasons to use localized cryotherapy. We encourage you to talk further with us about why you should be using the treatment. We are happy to help you decided what will be best for your needs.

Whole-body Cryotherapy is safe. Our highest priority is your safety and health. We use a U.S.A.-manufactured Impact cryosauna that provides the highest quality experience for you. Our Impact cryosauna has earned the ETL mark from the testing laboratory Intertek. The ETL mark certifies that the Impact cryosaunas are compliant to applicable US electrical safety standards and provides users with a safe cryotherapy experience. Cryosaunas have been used for 30+ years without any severe adverse reaction recorded. Problems have only arisen when a client steps into a cryosauna with wet clothing or a wet body. Water at that temperature will automatically freeze. To prevent this reaction, we provide you with dry gloves, socks and shoes as well as moisture stripping wipes to ensure your safety during the treatment. We also encourage you to rotate your body every 30 seconds during your treatment. Your session will be run by one of our staff members who are all certified in using the cryotherapy equipment. During your session, a staff member remains in the room throughout the entire session monitoring your well-being and safety. We are able to pause and/or stop at any point during your session and the door of the cryosauna does not have a lock, therefore you may exit at anytime. The liquid nitrogen mist that fills the cryosauna is a non- toxic gas that makes up 78% of the air that we breathe every day. Before every session, our staff members adjust the platform according to your height, allowing you to breathe fresh air and talk with us during your session. For additional safety purposes, all cryotherapy treatment rooms have an oxygen monitor installed. Following your treatment your skin may experience some redness but this reaction is completely normal and ok. The redness will subside shortly after your treatment.

The first whole-body cryotherapy sauna was created by a Japanese doctor in the late 1970s. The whole-body cryotherapy sauna was developed to help patients who were suffering from chronic pain and inflammation due to rheumatoid arthritis. The treatment was later introduced in Europe in the late 1980s when European soccer teams began using it to improve player performance.

Over the past two decades, several clinical studies have been conducted in Europe and they established that whole-body cryotherapy is a powerful and effective treatment for inflammatory injuries and disorders. While whole-body cryotherapy was originally intended to help aid recovery from pain and inflammation, many medical journals state that there are new benefits being found for cold therapy as an actual health treatment. The use of whole-body cryotherapy is much more common over in Europe and the treatment is now covered under insurance in European countries. During the past ten years, whole-body cryotherapy has made its way over to the United States and in more recent years, the use of the treatment has begun to rapidly grow. Whole-body Cryotherapy is considered a holistic healing treatment in the United States.

Although there are some exceptions, most people can enjoy the benefits of cryotherapy.  The treatment was originally created to help those with rheumatoid arthritis heal from chronic pain and inflammation and later became popular with several athletes in order to increase their performance. However, once the treatment began to spread and its popularity began to increase, it was discovered that even those who are not suffering from chronic pain and inflammation and those that are not athletes, can benefit from the treatment as well. If you wish to improve your overall health and appearance, you can likely benefit from the cryotherapy.

While we wish that everyone could experience the benefits of Cryotherapy, you cannot partake of a treatment if:

  • you are pregnant, you are unable to use Cryotherapy – however nursing mothers are welcome.
  • you have any of the following conditions:
    • Uncontrolled high blood pressure
    • Prior heart attack
    • Pacemaker
    • Unstable chest pain
    • Disease of blood vessels
    • History of blood clots
    • Cold Allergy
    • Open sores or stitches
    • Nerve pain in feet or legs
    • Fever
    • Also, all guests under the age of 18 years old require parental consent and the use of Cryotherapy is not recommended for any under the age of 14 years old.

You do not need to bring anything special with you to your appointment and you can wear whatever clothing you have on for your day. Before your session begins you will strip down to just your undergarments and remove all jewelry. You are required to wear DRY gloves, socks and shoes for the session in order to protect your more sensitive extremities from the cold. All of these items will be provided by Cryotherapy West Roxbury. Please make sure all undergarments are dry as well. If for any reason, your undergarments are damp or wet, please let us know and we will be happy to provide you with a pair of fresh clean under shorts. Please make sure you are sweat free and have no freshly applied body lotion on your skin. If you arrive for your appointment sweaty or with freshly applied body lotion, we will provide you with moisture stripping wipes.

Our localized cryotherapy treatments are done in a private room. If your localized treatment requires you to remove any clothing down to your undergarments, we will provide you with a robe for your comfort.

There are no special instructions for before or after a cryotherapy treatment. The only thing we recommend is to stay hydrated. You can do so with one of our complimentary water bottles that we offer at the store. Some people have questions and concerns about exercising and showering before/after a treatment. Find out more about both concerns below.

Yes, it is ok and actually recommended to exercise either before or after a cryotherapy treatment. Utilizing cryotherapy before you exercise can increase your performance and can aid in a faster recovery. You can expect a higher pain tolerance, more energy and greater flexibility. Utilizing cryotherapy after you exercise can help you recover faster. A cryotherapy treatment post-exercise can allow you to experience greater energy and reduces the inflammation in your body which will help shorten the recovery time between your workouts.

It is not necessary or required to shower before or after a treatment. The liquid nitrogen used in all cryotherapy treatments is dry and will not make your skin wet.

Our goal is to have you in and out of our store as quickly as possible, allowing you to enjoy the benefits of cryotherapy without taking too much time away from the rest of your day. All three of our cryotherapy treatments last an average of ten minutes or less from entrance to exit.  Check out the breakdown of time for each of our three services:

Whole-body Cryotherapy

Your session inside the cryosauna is 3 minutes and then you will need a few minutes to change your clothes.

Localized Cryotherapy

Your localized Cryotherapy treatment is 4-6 minutes and if your treatment requires you to remove any clothing, you will need a few minutes for changing.

CryoFacials

A cryofacial does not require you to remove any clothing, therefore your appointment is just 8 minutes of relaxation and pure bliss in our private treatment room!

We recommend that you leave yourself an additional 10 minutes before your first appointment. This will allow us to ensure that your account has been created, waiver has been signed and let us walk you through the overall process of your first cryotherapy treatment.

The nitrogen mist used during a cryotherapy session is cooled to between -130F and -184F. While many are concerned about the low temperature, the nitrogen mist is a dry ice that many find very tolerable during their quick two to three minute session. Trust us, as Boston natives, we can assure you that you a cryotherapy session is a lot easier to tolerate than most winter days we experience here in the Northeast. As your near the end of your session, you may experience a “pins and needles” sensation which is OK and disappears immediately after the treatment is over. Once your session is complete and you exit the cryosauna, your skin immediately begins to warm back up while you begin to enjoy the wonderful benefits of your cryotherapy treatment.

For those that have concerns about being claustrophobic while in the cryosauna, please be assured that your head is outside of the cryosauna throughout the whole treatment and the door on the cryosauna does not lock, allowing you to exit at any time. People that are claustrophobic and have already taken part in whole-body cryotherapy sessions, have reported that they feel fine while in the cryosauna.

No, it is not possible to catch a cold from cryotherapy. You catch a cold when you are exposed to fluids that contain a cold virus. You are not exposed to nor do you come into contact with any fluids during your session. whole-body cryotherapy can actually stimulate the immune system, helping to decrease the severity and frequency of colds and other viral and bacterial conditions.

Everyones use for cryotherapy is different and the proper usage of the treatment varies for each individual. For whole-body cryotherapy, we recommend that during your first two weeks you do as many treatments as possible in close consecutive days. Once you see how your body reacts to the treatment, you will be able to get a feel for how often you will need to continue using cryotherapy. During your time at Cryotherapy West Roxbury, we will talk with you in order to create the best cryotherapy schedule for your needs. More serious chronic conditions will need more treatments whereas those who are looking to utilize it as a supplement for their health and lifestyle will not need as may treatments in order to feel the benefits.

The use of localized cryotherapy varies for each person as well. Depending on the severity of the condition you are trying to treat you may benefit from several localized treatments a week while others may only need to utilize the treatment once every few weeks. Once you begin your localized cryotherapy treatments, you will start to feel how often your body will need treatments.

The use of cryofacials can vary as well. You can expect to benefit from the treatment every time you receive a cryofacial.

While cryotherapy treatments are covered under health insurance over in Europe, the treatment is unfortunately not yet covered under any insurance here in the United States. Since the treatment is not covered under any insurance and we are eager to share the benefits of cryotherapy with as many people possible, we are committed to keeping our package options at a low and affordable price.

We do happily accept HSA (health spending accounts) + FSA (flex spending accounts) for payment.

Please give us a call at (617) 942- 8488 for any additional questions or concerns. We are more than happy to discuss all things Cryotherapy with you. We can also be reached via our online contact form or on our smartphone app.
